Name: Vernon "Vern" O'Vaughn (adoptive name); Vartox (birth name)
Code Name: Starman
Age: 18
Affiliation: Justice League
Powers: Due to his father's experiments in hyperspace travel, Vern's genetic structure was completely altered. The radiation involved in the experiments completely changed him while still an infant. In particular, his mental facilities were increased and enhanced. As a whole, he refers to his abilities as "Hyper-Power." This extends into numerous powers and abilities, both mental and physical.
His physical powers alone are amazing. His molecular structure is extremely dense. This grants him a great deal of invulnerability to physical and energy attacks, on par with Superman's own. His strength allows him to lift virtually anything. There is no known object he cannot lift. Hyperman is able to move at superhuman speeds and his senses are greatly enhanced. He is able to convert his body into pure "hyper-energy." Rarely used, it allows him to move past the speed of light, move through objects, etc. By shunting his mass through hyperspace, Hyperman can teleport instantly. He can also become intangible, allowing him to move through objects unharmed.
Hyperman's mental powers are his main abilities, however. First and foremost, he has telekinesis, allowing him to move objects with his mind. In what is referred to as "Hyper-remote-control-blows", he can punch and kick the air, and the equivilant damage will be done to somebody or something that he chooses as if he was actually hitting them, despite him being a distance away. He is telepathic, which allows him to fire mind bolts, communicate mentally, read minds, cast illusions, and control the minds of others.
His "hyper-energy" can be channeled in a number of ways. He can shoot raw energy, which has a concussive effect. He can channel his energy into Hyper-charges, which are spheres of energy, which can detonate on impact or explode on a timer. The Hyper-obliteration-charge allows him to channel his energy into air molecules and generate explosions. He can fire blasts of heat and cold, which can burn and melt objects or flash-freeze them. His hyper-energy can also work similar to a Green Lantern ring, allowing him to create objects with it, such as nets, bubbles, force fields, etc.
Personality: Most of the time, Vern is a simple, carefree person. He has a sharp tongue and a quick wit, often snapping off one-liners. His intelligence gives him an amazing vocabulary, and all of his years of watching television and studying Earth culture has given him the ability to mouth off with the best of them.
He's also quite a flirt, whether he knows it or not, as he seems to flirt with nearly every woman he meets - with little results. This boggles his mind, since he's physically attractive and quite charming. It may just be the women he meets. Whatever it may be, he rarely has a girlfriend, despite his wishes.
As Starman, however, his personality contrasts sharply. His voice becomes low and deep, almost monotone, while his personality becomes darker, perhaps more cynical. Due to his feeling like an outsider, with his origin, he is prone to becoming angry and filled with angst. As a result, he often practices ancient Valeronian meditation techniques. He has no qualms about killing superpowered threats if there is absolutely no other alternative.
Appearance: See sig.
History: The planet Valeron was once a proud civilization. Their technology was millions of years ahead of our own. The Valeronians were the dominant species, and they sought only to live in peace and harmony. However, not everything was perfect. The Tynolans, a shootoff of the Valeronians, hated everything and sought violence. As a result, the Valeronians and Tynolans were at war.
One of these Valeronians was Vartox. As the son of the regal scientists Voltix and Phyla, he was the heir to a great legacy. His bloodline was responsible for many important advances on Valerons, which practically made him the next in line to be the head scientist. For decades, his family's main focus was hyperspace travel, which would allow instantaneous travel across the universe. It was during one experiment that the baby Vartox was exposed to hyperspace energy accidentally. Immediate medical scans were done, but no damage or side effects were involved.
Vartox was to begin training in the Academy at the age of three. With their advanced technology and intellect, Valeronians would have the intelligence of a teenager by the time they were five.
Unfortunately, Vartox barely made it to one.
Just after his first birthday, the Tynolans performed a massive invasion. All of the Valeronians were killed. The last three people alive were Voltix, Phyla, and Vartox. Voltix activated a prototype hyperspace device. However, the other planets that the device plans were delivered to were far too primitive to figure out how to build them.
Except one.
The planet Krypton was a staunch ally of the Valeronians. In fact, Valeron started as a colony world of Krypton hundreds of years ago, but with their different sciences and methods, they evolved quite different. The Kryptonians had provided them with weapons in return for technology aid. Both sought peace in the universe. However, Krypton was destroyed by natural circumstances. In fact, it was Krypton's destruction that disrupted Valeron's forcefield and thus allowed the Tynolans to invade.
The Tynolans were invading the Voltix's laboratory. As a result, he had no choice but to put his one-year-old son into the teleporter and choose a random location, hoping that not only would he materialize somewhere, but that he would do so on a viable planet.
Dr. O'Vaughn was a brilliant physicist. Working off of a variety of grants, he, too, experimented with hyperspace travel. Perhaps it was fate that a kind, gentle man would work in the same field. One year prior to the deaths of the Valeronians, O'Vaughn and his crew finished the device. However, when they activated it, nothing happened. The teleporter resided in his basement, unused. Suddenly, a year later, it turned itself on. They waited, and suddenly, a figure appeared. It appeared to be an average human infant, no older than one.
The frightened babe was soothed by Dr. O'Vaughn, who adopted the boy. He was christened Vern O'Vaughn. He was raised in Hub City as a normal human. By the time he started first grade, Vern had adapted to human life. By the time he was in the middle of elementary school, his memories of Valeron had become simple dreams. His parents told him that he was simply adopted from an orphanage.
As he reached his teen years, Vern began to exhibit a variety of abilities, such as flight. His parents finally told him the truth of his origins. Disturbed, though relieved, Vern began to adapt to his life. In his senior year, Vern was summoned to the desert by a psychic force. Arriving there, he found the remains of Xelav, where he was informed of his full origins. He began training with the psychic force of his true father. With the advanced technology and psychic means, they finished five years of training in a matter of days.
Finally, his training was complete - at least for now. Going back out into the world, Vern graduated...but where did he go from here? He didn't want a regular job. While thinking about what to do with his life, Vern began to use his powers in secret. It was a chance meeting with the Green Arrow that led to Vern being recruited, taking on the codename of Starman. With their similar origins and their planets even being allies when they were alive, Vern has become a mentor to Clark Kent.
